  • No Communications
    January 19, 2009

Early morning (very early) Victor received a phone call from the alarm company. They had lost communications from our office. Victor attempted to connect to our mail and web servers but without success so he dragged himself over to the office to see what catastrophe had occurred. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary until he picked up a phone to make a call - no dial tone! Same on all lines and a quick verification showed that there was also no internet connection. Call to the phone company - they had received one earlier call in the area and had scheduled a repair crew for later. Added our problems to their call list.

So Victor walked out behind the office to see if he could see a problem. There definitely was - the main trunk cable for the entire block had been cut! Most likely a snow plough had hooked the cable and brought it down, so cutting off communications for all businesses in the area. Several of us ended up working from home since we need internet communications to provide support for our customers, but there was still the problem of no email and no way to connect to the support database at the office. Fortunately all services were restored shortly after 6 in the evening so all was back to normal the following day.
